Up in Flames by Kelly Hashway

UIF Blog Tour (1).JPGUp in Flames Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Cara Tillman is in more danger than ever.

All around her, Cara’s fellow Phoenixes are being attacked. With no other choice, she and her group take the only option they have—call more Phoenixes out of hiding and wage an all-out war against the Hunters. But with the lines of loyalty blurred, and Phoenix secrets to be kept, there’s no guarantee anyone can be trusted.

Logan Schmidt walks the blade of love and obligation—and just one slip may end them all.

After stealing the Phoenix dagger and going into hiding, the Hunters are convinced Logan is one of their own. But with Cara’s memories recovered, her heart is set on Logan’s return. The problem is, she may be the only one who trusts him.

It isn’t long until Logan’s disappearance is noticed by his long-time friend, Anton Botas, who is more than just an outsider. Though Logan trusts him, the Phoenixes do not, opening yet another fault line in their plans.

Where there is one, there are many.

Determined to end this once and for all, Cara and the others must destroy the Phoenix daggers—the only weapons able to kill her kind. But in a raging battle, Cara learns the awful truth about the relics. Destroying them may destroy the Phoenixes in the process.

Can Cara and her friends end this war, or is their future destined to go Up In Flames?

 What I thought:

I have enjoyed this series from the beginning. I have loved watching the characters grow and the stories build, and the secrets unfold. And everything just got better with each book. I was so eager to find out what happened in the last book, to see if suspicions I had were right, to see everything play out. But at the same time, that meant that this was the end of the series. And this makes me sad. 😦

As in the past books, Up in Flames picks up where Out of the Ashes left off. Logan has discovered he is a Hunter, but a different kind of Hunter. They have also discovered that there is more than one dagger. Of course, aside from Cara, none of the Phoenixes are very happy with Logan, although Cara and Logan are both trying to convince them that he is on their side.

I really came to love Logan. I liked him, but as his character has grown and developed throughout this series, I have come to love him. And he and Cara are so good together.

There were several twists in this story and some of them were a little predictable, but Hashway did manage to keep the suspense factor going. I WAS RIGHT ABOUT ONE THING, but that is all I’m going to say about that.

I also LOVED how she incorporated the history of the daggers and that whole angle into this story. That was really cool since the whole Phoenix and Hunter is a fresh paranormal angle anyway.

And the ending……..I couldn’t have imagined a better ending for this series. Again, said to see it end, but that’s what re-reads are for. 🙂

FIVE well deserved stars.

And to end this review, here is a dream cast of the series provided by Kelly.

Into the Fire Trilogy Dream Cast

I’m so bad at deciding dream casts because I always have an image in mind for my characters and matching that to actors is tough! But I think the cast I’ve come up with does Cara and the gang justice.

Cara Tillman ~ Dove Cameron

Dove would need some fiery red streaks in her hair and sapphire blue contacts, but I think she could pull off the many sides of Cara Tillman. She did a great job in Disney’s Descendants playing both the tough girl and the sensitive type.

Logan Schmidt ~ Spencer Boldman

Okay, so Spencer Boldman played a very comedic character on Lab Rats, but I’ve seen him play serious roles too and he’s actually better at those, so I think he could pull off the tough Logan Schmidt, who is mourning the loss of several people in his life and struggling to come to terms with who he is.

Rachel (Cara’s best friend) ~ Maia Mitchell

Maia is another one who can play different roles. Rachel is spunky and has these comments that make you laugh out loud because they’re so blunt. She’ll also do anything for the people she cares about. I think Maia could play that role well.

Jeremy Tillman (Cara’s brother) ~ Cody Christian

You might recognize Cody from Pretty Little Liars, one of my favorite shows! He plays Mike Montgomery, and if you follow the show, you know he is able to pull off so many different roles. He’d make a great Jeremy. I originally picked him for Nick in Into the Fire, but he’d definitely make a better Jeremy. He’d need to dye his hair of course. 😉

So there’s my dream cast. Do you know these actors?

Into the Fire by Kelly Hashway

GetAttachmentIn one month’s time, seventeen-year-old Cara Tillman will die and be reborn from her own ashes…

Her life of secrecy has never been easy. She’s watched her younger brother, Jeremy, burn and rise again in a coming-of-age process called rebirth. And just like her brother, when her time comes, she won’t remember anything from her first life other than she’s a Phoenix—a member of a small group of people descended from the mythical Phoenix bird.

The last thing she needs to worry about is falling for the new guy in town—Logan Schmidt.

Cara is drawn to Logan in a way she can’t explain, but she’s not exactly complaining. Everything is perfect…except it’s not. Once she’s reborn, she’ll forget Logan. And to make things worse, a Phoenix Hunter is on the loose, and Cara’s involvement with Logan is bringing out her Phoenix qualities—the very qualities that will draw the Hunter right to her.

Desperate times call for desperate measures…

Afraid of hurting Logan, Cara breaks it off for good. But her attraction to him runs deeper than a typical high school crush. She wants him—needs him. And if he proves willing to stay by her side, their love might destroy them both.

Can Cara hide from the Phoenix Hunters long enough to survive her rebirth? And if so, will it mean a new beginning with Logan—or the beginning of the end?

This is one of my favorite books of 2016 so far.

There are so many things I love about this book. I love the concept of it. The Phoenix concept is one that I haven’t read yet, so I enjoyed it. The book started off with Jeremy, Cara’s brother, being reborn, which is part of being a Phoenix. The author didn’t give a lot of backstory as far as Phoenixes and the story of Cara and her family. Rather, the reader finds out this information as the story unfolds, which I thought was cool. A YA supernatural book, using a fresh concept…..we’re off to a good start.

Cara is having a hard time dealing with her brother’s rebirth, and also her upcoming rebirth. Her brother doesn’t remember her and she’s upset about that and also dreading going through that herself. When she’s trying to find some clarity in it all, she meets the new guy, Logan.

To make matters worse, she imprints on him.

I know……..imprinting. Weird concept. I almost DIDN’T like it, but then I realized how crucial it was, and how it was a driving point in the story, so I quickly warmed to it.

As if all of that isn’t bad enough, there is a Phoenix hunter on the prowl. Phoenixes, especially older ones, are typically skilled at hiding their abilities and traits. However, there are several risks involved with Jeremy being newly reborn and Cara on the brink of rebirth. Not to mention, the imprint is making Cara’s emotions more heightened than they normally are.

There isn’t too much more I can say without giving away spoilers 🙂

I love the relationships in this book…..Cara and her family, Cara and her friends, the Phoenixes, Cara and Logan. Also, can we talk about how beautiful the cover is? And it gives you a great mental image of Cara while you’re reading.

Also, I felt like the author did a fantastic job of concealing the identity of the Hunter. It was a surprise, although I did manage to figure it out JUST before it was revealed.

And of course, the lovely Kelly Hashaway ends the book in a magnificent cliffhanger that you kind of see coming….but it still hits you in the feels anyway.

I am giving Into the Fire five stars, and I cannot WAIT to read the rest of this series!
